Retail Pro Version 9

March 26, 2008

For those of you using Retail Pro (point of sale system) version 8, I’m sure you’ve heard that version 9 is now available.  I know some retailers are hesitant to jump into the new version, afraid that the "kinks" haven’t yet been worked through.  This is a good possibility but we are going head first into this.  Because Retail Pro V9 is integrated with an Oracle database and features the basics of Crystal Reports, I believe it will be significantly better for our particular operation.

In the past, we have had problems with our reports showing items that had been taken out of inventory via the "clean house" method.  This was the one place where we really needed those items to be gone.  Aside from that, most everything else has been user error.  Version 9, while far more intricate, appears to be more user friendly.  This could be because I’m familiar with Retail Pro now but was not when we installed version 8.  Not only has the system improved, but so have the users.

Of you, the readers, who is currently using Retail Pro?  Are you concidering upgrading now, later, or never?  Has anyone already transitioned into version 9?  Do you have any feedback for someone about to dive in?  (other than "don’t" because it’s too late for that!)

This morning I attended the Introduction to V9 webinar which I found on Retail Pro’s website.  I found it very useful in giving me a full overview of version 9.  If any of you are concidering the upgrade, I would highly recommend this conference call/online demonstration.  It may be just the tool you need to help decide if V9 is right for you.

Looks like my post was cut off. We would like to offer another alternative to help transition RetailPro users to another system. We are currently offering 40% off CounterPoint SQL to current Retail Pro users. We are an Elite Retail Partner of Radiant Systems (a very successful, stable producer of software & hardware for POS). www.mainspring.net

For retailers and RetailPro users who are frustrated, you should never be stuck working with a reseller. You should buy software that is supported by the developers themselves. Don't discount the more stable privately held companies like TAM Retail, for example, whose POS and Inventory run on SQL with Crystal reports and has its own eCommerce engine. Worth a hard look.

MrHall - We've been working with a Retail Pro reseller for over a year and a half in a large integration effort primarily to offer visibility into the data contained within Retail Pro's Version 8 product. Migration to Version 9 has been delayed a few times over and from what we've heard to date, does not prove to be a major leap. If visibility into your retail operation is what you're after, our KPI Dashboard and Open to Buy Planning solution offer tremendous value for the investment. Feel free to contact us and we can discuss further - info@easyretail.ca. Cheers,

Thank toy MrHall I want to know that either Dynamics RMS is real-time or if not then how its polling works? Second if it only provides two level of inventory then how to make product hierarchy in it? Thanks in advance.

MrHall - conversion of static data (customer, inventory, etc.) is relatively simple although you have to recognize the architecture is different, so not everything will translate into RMS as it was handled in RPRO. For instance - RPRO has 3 levels of inventory (D, C and S) while RMS only has 2 (although NitroSell does provide for 3rd - an example of RMS's extensibility) No transactions would float across at all. Typically people keep RPRO available for reporting and just move forward with the new system (RMS or whichever they change to. Give me a call at the NitroSell San Diego office and we can chat a bit, and I can find a few contacts that could assist you.

wow - Sadly, I can't say any of this is surprising. I was a certified trainer since V6 and I've since moved on and been working with the Microsoft RMS. We love it. It's much more affordable to buy, scale, support, etc. RPRO does have a few more features out of the box but RMS is open and customizable, and you're not a slave to your local reseller. It's also backed by a company that's not going anywhere. How many times has RPRO been sold off in the past few years? Looks like the falsified some financials (based on a settlement with the SEC in September) as well...not good signs. Sure glad I moved my folks' stores off 2 years ago. Good luck to you all.

Kelly...you are not crazy. I hate it when I hear 'we've never heard that/had that request' when I'm asking for something as fundamental as a stock report. At this point I do not trust version 9 at my POS's. I'm only considering using it for reporting, if and when I ever get it operating and giving accurate data. If there was a way to get my data to link with something like MS Access with ODBE then I could write all the reports I wanted and I'd be happy. Oh, wait, they did have that. 'Retail Business Analytics'. But they don't offer or support it anymore...BECAUSE THEY MOVED TO VERSION 9!!! So frustrating. And to top it all off, Retail Pro is now filing for bankruptcy and is facing securities fraud charges (I tried to link the article, but HTML is a no-no here. Just Google 'Retail Pro News'). Of course, our business partners say it's just a restructuring and nothing to worry about. Yeah...right. Keep me updated...this Retail Pro circus is entertaining, if not maddening.

Ali...We have not even got to the point of trying to write custom reports, so I can't answer your question. I can say that I was promised by RPro representatives at the Retail Pro conference in Vegas back in '06 that reports like these would be possible, even easier to create. But we have had no luck in even getting a version 9 main to run long enough to try it. I do have a report created in version 8.52 that lists Item code, sold qty (for a specific date range), and on hand qty's (for the whole company), among other things. We were also promised at that convention that all items in version 9 would show entire history under form view in Merchandise->Inventory (Receives, Transfers, Adjustments, Sales...everything). In the real world we found it to be extremely slow and inaccurate.

So I'm not crazy. They made it sound like the stock report that we wanted was strange and that no one else had asked for this kind of report. The reports were the only problem that we had with Version 8, also. Now on Version 9 we are going to have to use a seperate report viewer and who knows if the POS will run smoothly. I guess it has been since 07 that we have been working on this, too. It's so frustrating. It is almost February of 09 and we still have not gone live. I will be sure to keep everyone updated.

Kelly, I'm very interested in your progress with version 9. It sounds like your experiences mimic ours. We have been toying with version 9 since early '07 but have had constant problems. The only problem with version 8.52 for us is the lack of reporting capabilities. Version 9 was supposed to fix this for us, but we have yet to get a reliable report out of it. I've bookmarked your blog and will be watching for updates on this subject.

We are still in the process of finalizing the details. We have several reports that we run that are going to have to be viewed with seperate software. We're also having to upgrade some of our hardware. This has become a very expensive and tedious project. Hopefully we'll go live in the next week or so. I'll keep everyone posted.

This version has been in the works for so many years I'm tempted not to trust it. I've been to RetailPro's offices for a "do-or-die" kind of meeting (with 4 other retailers) in 2004. It seemed then that they didn't really want meet with us or help fix problems their software caused. It was very bad way to handle some unhappy customers. I'm at a different retailer now and we are now in version 8.52. I have seen version 9 and I must say that I'm not impressed. It's 2008 and what they are doing what can be done by anyone with MS Access. Plus, I know how much they've invested in Oracle and I fear they have passed on the "dotcom" era cost to us.

I really feel lucky to be within a half hour of the resell center for the south east. I think companies in general feel more pressure to perform for local customers. If you are not getting service and end up with an option to go with a different reseller, I'd definitely shop it. Service is of the highest importance and cannot be sacrificed with a point of sale system.

I like Retail Pro but have found our local reseller to be worthless. Retail Pro has had tight territorial restrictions for its franchisers in the past but I have been told that is history. You might be able to shop around for the best price for Retail Pro upgrades and equipment.
